A Brief History

William and JL Coleman established the Indite Circle in 1999, two writers and two brothers with one idea. "Let's make a web site! A Web-Zine," said the brothers. "A place where new and inspiring writers can publish their work, and a place where writers could get feedback on their short stories and poetry." Hence, The Indite Circle (JL came up with the name, I wasn't even sure what the definition of indite was).

Indite (a: to write, or to compose.)
Circle (persons grouped around a center of interest.)

The brothers quickly discovered that putting together a web site, is to say the least, amusing. We learned the basics of HTML, slapped something together, acquired a web host, and downloaded an FTP program. I banged my head against the edge of my desk for two nights until the FTP software decided to cooperate and send our files to the server - don't laugh, everybody has to start somewhere.

We plodded along for about 2 years, changed the design a few times, got to know some good writers from around the world, had a mild following and about 100 hits per month. We thought seriously about giving it up and going on to something else - free time is a valuable commodity. JL was a part-time student in addition to working full-time, I worked full time, and am now designing web pages part-time freelance - yes, fate does have a sense of irony. We did put the project up on the shelf for over a year and lost pretty much every thing we had accomplished.

In 2003, I started it up again, and decided to try a more interactive site. Writers would be able to join, log in, submit stories, participate in other site activities, e.g. an interactive story, an on-the-fly poetry game ...

Soon Sheila joined, our beautiful poetry editor, and things began to pick up. In 2005, during a staff meeting, we decided it was time for a change - the site was just too diverse. The new Indite Circle would be an on-line magazine with regular issues - quarterly. I would design a whole new site, a new layout, simple and classy - at least that was the goal. We would tighten the reigns a bit as far as what we would and would not accept. Primarily we would try to get back what was most important - the writers. We would focus the entire site on the published literature and the writers.

What kind of literature are we looking for? Well, that's a tough question. We'd like to be open for any kind of new ideas or experimentation. We look mostly for creativity and imagination, though writing style is important to.

Today we get between 2 and 3 thousand visitors a month and are always growing. We have just moved to a new, and faster server. Still, we do this all in our free time which is sometimes limited. If you have any questions regarding The Indite Circle, or would like to help out in some way, just drop us a line via our Contact page.
